Patna, Sept. 12: The weakening rupee has come as a boon for the Sonepur Mela organisers. Visitors will have to shell out more for staying at the fair’s famed Swiss cottages.

The cottages — blending the rural setting with modern facilities — are a major draw for thousands of foreigners thronging the fair every year. The rent for a single night at the cottages has risen from around Rs 4,000 in 2012 to Rs 7,000 this year. Around 20 such huts would be set up this year.

Bookings for these cottages have started. One needs to visit the BSTDC website ( for details. Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC), the agency that looks after the Swiss cottages at the fair, is charging Rs 7,000 per night for each cottage during the first week of the fair (November 16 to 22). The charges would dip to Rs 2,500 in the second week (November 23 to 29) and to Rs 499 from November 30 till the fair ends around December 15.

The cottage tariff for the first week for the past few years have mostly been higher than the subsequent weeks and perhaps, the same factor has been taken into account for hiking the prices this year.

“The first week at Sonepur fair is peak period for foreign tourists. The tariff for the first week has been hiked to generate maximum revenue,” said a senior BSTDC officer.
