Patna: Deputy-inspector general (Central) Rajesh Kumar on Tuesday inaugurated a girls' security booth at Patna University's constituent college - Magadh Mahila College.

Four women constables will man the booth that will be attached to a local (Gandhi Maidan) police station. The station will co-ordinate with the four constables to provide security to the girl students. If a girl student comes up with security-related issues, the women constables will first tackle the matter on their own and later, if required, take help of the local police station.

DIG (Central) Rajesh said the move was aimed at instilling a sense of security among girl students. He said such booths will come up at all other girl's colleges and government girl's schools in Patna.

"We're also going to train girls in martial arts so that they are able to defend themselves. The training will take place at two places - Eco Park and Magadh Mahila College - and it will start from Thursday," DIG Rajesh said. "Also, a mobile application is going to be launched with an SoS option, on pressing which a message will be directly sent to the police who will try to get in touch with the sender as soon as possible through a GPS tracing device. We're going to launch this application after 10 days. Also, a girls' guidance centre will open at the traffic superintendent of police office involving experts such as teachers, the police and people from different walks of life. The centre will not only provide career guidance but also guidance on security-related issues. The centre will run for an hour on fixed days." DIG Rajesh will visit girls' institutions in the next few weeks for opening of booths there.

"Girl students often complain about molestation taking place just outside the campus. We're unable to handle cases reported outside," Magadh Mahila College principal Shashi Sharma said. "These initiatives will shatter the confidence of those involved in such episodes, and also give girls confidence."

"I must praise the police to have come up with such an extensive plan," said Alka Raj, a BA student of the college.

"I hope the city police do not abandon these programmes midway. It will be really disheartening if they do so."
