Calcutta: Friday marked the 50th anniversary of an iconic achievement - smashing 6 sixes in 6 balls in First-Class cricket. To octogenarian Sir Garfield Sobers, the greatest player alive, goes the credit for clobbering Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash en route to storming his way into every book of records.
Sir Garry was turning out for Nottinghamshire, the only County he played for, in a Championship match.
Seventeen years later, of course, Ravi Shastri (currently India's head coach) matched Sir Garry when he took 6 off 6 at the expense of Baroda's Tilak Raj. That was in the Ranji Trophy and Shastri was wearing the Bombay cap.
A couple of months later, Shastri went on to be crowned the Champion of Champions in the World Championship of Cricket, won by India under Sunil Gavaskar's captaincy.
Commemorating August 31, 1968, Yuvraj Singh sent a WhatsApp message to The Telegraph. "Sir Garry's feat clearly was a pioneering moment. To hit 6 sixes in 6 balls is incredible. That we're talking about it 50 years later, just shows the impact that one over and one cricketer had...
"I recall watching footage of Sir Garry's achievement and having the urge to replicate his feat. My moment came in 2007 (in the inaugural World T20, against England's Stuart Broad). It's a record I will forever cherish."
The 36-year-old Yuvraj is the only batsman to smash 6 off 6 in T20Is. In ODIs, by the way, no one has matched Herschelle Gibbs's achievement. Where Test cricket is concerned, 6 in 6 hasn't yet been registered, despite the fairly overwhelming influence of the T20 format.
Out of favour with the national selectors for over a year, Yuvraj is in the UK - his sasural - at this point in time.
When not playing, much of cancer-survivor Yuvraj's time and energy is devoted to promoting his YouWeCan brand of products. Part of the proceeds from the range goes towards helping those who require a hand at a critical period in their lives.
Even if Yuvraj doesn't get another opportunity to play for India, he'll remain a winner.
