Calcutta: ATK head coach Teddy Sheringham felt that after scoring the equaliser against FC Pune City, his team went to sleep and that cost them the match.

"It looked a big margin, but it was closely fought for an hour. We got ourselves back in it with a fantastic free-kick, but went to sleep for a couple of seconds and put under ourselves under pressure again to concede the second goal," Sheringham said after the 1-4 loss on Sunday.

Bipin Singh converted with a wonderfully taken free-kick in the 50th minute to cancel Marcelinho's first-half strike. But in the very next minute post the equaliser, Rohit Kumar headed in Marcelinho's corner to make it 2-1 in favour of Pune City.

Asked if he blamed his team's defence for the result, Sheringham replied: "We defend as a team and attack as a team. It's not just about the defence or the goalkeeper. We defend from the front as well.

"We need to do better as a team all over the pitch. Switching on after scoring a goal and to stop the opponents from scoring depend on whether you play as a unit, so it's not just about defence.

"You can't really blame (goalkeeper) Debjit Majumder. In case of the first goal, he fell against a clear shot and I can't blame him for that. The second one, a far post header, and in these cases centre halves got to do better and protect it.

"The third one was a deflection and I haven't seen the fourth. So, no point blaming Debjit... Sometimes it happens in football and you find yourself alone being the goalkeeper," Sheringham said.

Pune City's Rohit, who scored the second and most important goal for his team, seemed to be over the moon. "I'm very happy to have scored. But more importantly, we have won the game.

"As a player, I want to learn everyday. My ultimate aim is to play for India," he said.

When asked about his goal, Rohit said: "I saw Marcelinho's corner and just wanted to score, and I did it."

Pune City coach Ranko Popovic admitted that the visitors didn't really expect such a big win against the defending champions.

"We did not expect to win by such a big margin, but we certainly came here to win.

"ATK are good team. We are jealous of their success and want to come close to them," Popovic said.

"ATK have 16 more games and so, there's plenty of time to bounce back.

"We still have a lot of work to do, so we want to think about ourselves only, not the opponents.

"A victory is always helpful and I believe it will help us in the coming days... Will definitely boost our confidence," Popovic added.

Asked about Marcelinho, he said: "He played for the team and did his best.

"Everybody in the team played well. But Marcelinho is one of the best players in the league."

Pune City next take on Mumbai City FC at home on Wednesday.
