Captain Virat Kohli rued the missed opportunity of going one up against England in the ongoing series as a washout on the final day in Nottingham forced the first Test to end in a draw.
“We were expecting rain on the third and fourth days, but it chose to come on the fifth day. It would have been enjoyable to play and watch, but it’s a shame that there wasn’t any play today,” Kohli said during the post-match presentation.
“This is exactly what we wanted to do; start strong. On Day V, we knew we had our chances. We certainly felt like we were on top of the game. Getting that (first innings) lead was crucial, but it’s a shame we couldn’t have any play on Day V.”
Kohli emphasised the fact that the focus of India’s batsmen during the final hour on Day IV was on scoring runs and not survival. “Getting to 50-odd overnight was important.
“We just didn’t want to play for survival. Our intent kept us ahead.
“It’s been hard work of three-odd weeks for our bowlers with the bat. We were talking of a lead of 40-odd, but we ended up with 95 and those runs were gold dust,” Kohli said.
