Several spectators were injured and four were taken to the hospital after police lathicharged to disperse agitating fans following the East Bengal versus Peerless SC CFL match, at the East Bengal ground, on Monday.

The home team lost 0-1, and angry fans unhappy with the refereeing, threw water bottles into the ground. The unrest was fuelled further by some of the East Bengal players and support staff, who charged at and heckled the referee.

After some verbal altercation with the fans, police resorted to lathicharge. But the situation worsened after many of the fans were injured. Allegations that a club flag in the stands was torn by some police personnel angered the crowd further.
