The two western India nominees, trainers Altamash Ahmed’s Astapi, ridden by J Christopher and Bezan Chenoy charge Nefyn (J. Fortune-up), scored sensational upset wins in their respective events — the 3,000m Stayers’ Cup and the 1,200m Sprinters’ Cup, at the Malakpet racecourse in Hyderabad, on Saturday. Both were ridden in almost identical manners — being held back in mid-division and brought with late runs to score in triangular contests. Astapi found strong challengers in Wind Stream and last year’s winner Native Knight while Nefyn got the better of Dancing Prances and Speed Six to lift the trophy, in successive years. Fortune timed his challenge to perfection on the eight-year-old, by Senure out of Machrihanish, to snatch the verdict at the post.
