Calcutta: Putting an end to speculation, Trevor James Morgan resigned as head coach of East Bengal on Monday.
The Englishman mailed his resignation to East Bengal football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya in the afternoon.
"Yes, Morgan has resigned... He doesn't want to continue till the Federation Cup. We have accepted his resignation," club secretary Kalyan Majumdar confirmed.
Armando Colaco, who had coached East Bengal in the recent past, will take charge for the remainder of the season that includes their concluding I-League match against Minerva FC on April 23 and the Federation Cup. The Goan is expected to arrive in the city on Wednesday.
Morgan's resignation follows a disastrous run of four straight losses in the I-League, including the loss to arch-rivals Mohun Bagan in the return-leg Derby in Siliguri on April 9.
The run of defeats began in March when East Bengal lost to Churchill Brothers 1-2. Things got worse when they went down to Chennai City by a similar margin in an away game. That was followed by the Derby loss which virtually threw East Bengal out of the title race.
Pressure mounted on Morgan after a few hundred East Bengal supporters laid a siege at the club premises on Friday morning, demanding Morgan's ouster. They had tried to stop the team from training and shouted slogans when the coach was about to leave the club premises.
On Sunday afternoon, East Bengal's morale took a further beating when lowly-placed DSK Shivajians handed them their fourth straight loss. This forced Morgan to somewhat make up his mind, though he refused to divulge anything at the post-match press conference.
East Bengal have decided to form a panel comprising former players Bhaskar Ganguly, Manoranjan Bhattacharya and Tushar Rakshit, all of whom will oversee preparations and travel with the side. The trio will also work closely with coach Colaco once he takes over.
Manoranjan said the primary target will be to restore the players' confidence.
"The three of us haven't met and will have a meeting only tomorrow. Our primary target will be to restore the confidence level of the players. The players' confidence level is at its lowest and it's showing in the results...
"It seems like the players are going through a trauma... No team can perform under such circumstances," he said.
"I don't know any of these players much except Mehtab Hussain, who has played under my coaching. So, once we get together, we will be able to chalk out the way forward," the former East Bengal defender and coach said.
