Calcutta: International Master Sayantan Das secured his third and final Grandmaster norm during the Czech Open 2017, which concluded in Pardubice on Saturday.

Sayantan, a product of The Telegraph Schools' Chess, who learnt the basics of the game at the Alekhine Chess Club, finished 15th with 6.5 points and earned 25 Elo points.

However, Sayantan will have to reach the 2500 Elo-points mark to win the Grandmaster title.

Sayantan has 2399 points and it doesn't include the points he earned in Poland and Pardubice.

Sayantan next plays in Sweden and after that in Latvia. Sayantan scored 2.5 points against four Grandmasters, 1.5 points against two IMs. Now, the real battle starts as he has to play big tournaments and either beat or draw higher-ranked players.

If he wins the GM title, he will be the eighth from the state. Dibyendu Barua is the first GM from Bengal.
