The secretary of East Bengal club, Dipak Das, died at a city nursing home today. He was 61 and is survived by wife and a daughter.
Das was admitted to the nursing home late last month following a cerebral attack. He had recovered and was kept under observation but succumbed after another stroke in the afternoon.
As a mark of respect, tomorrow's National League match between East Bengal and ITI has been posponed by a day.
Widely known as Paltu'da, this North Calcutta-based official formed a major part of Maidan lores along with long-time aide Jiban Chakraborty.
After serving the club in several capacities, Das was elected club secretary for the first time last month but was taken ill soon after. He was admitted to the nursing home on February 22.
The club flag will be flown at half mast for seven days and his body will be taken to the club's Maidan tent tomorrow morning, after a brief halt at the CAB, IFAand the BHA, his body will be taken to the Nimtala Ghat crematorium.
Among those to pay tribute to the departed soul at the nursing home were state sports minister Subhas Chakraborty, state congress leader Somen Mitra, Mohun Bagan officials Tutu Bose and Anjan Mitra apart from a host of officials from other clubs and players.
