New Delhi: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has failed to arrange any exposure tour for the grapplers on the eve of Commonwealth Games. So Sushil Kumar has decided to spend from his own pocket for preparations.
According to sources, the double Olympic medallist is set to go to Georgia later this week with a four-member support staff, including a foreign coach and a sparring partner and train at the Olympic Centre there for a couple of weeks before travelling to Gold Coast for the CWG.
"Sushil is not part of the TOP (Target Olympic Podium) scheme and does not receive Rs 50,000 per month. But he has decided to go on his own. He is very serious about retaining his gold medal," said a WFI official.
Things, however, are not equally bright for rest of the Indian wrestlers as the WFI has failed to arrange any training stint for them. The WFI spike to their counterparts in countries like Kazakhstan, Japan and Bulgaria but did not receive any positive response from them.
So much so, the wrestling team, who traditionally win a big number of medals in Commonwealth Games, could be the most underprepared squad in the entire Indian contingent. While all other teams are reaching Gold Coast well ahead of the start, grapplers would only arrive two days before the competition.
The wrestling events are from April 12 to 14 and Indian wrestlers will reach on April 10. Federation officials said the tickets were issued by the agency earmarked by the government.
Overall, the Indian contingent could be of 335 people with around 227 athletes. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has reportedly put a restriction on the number of managers, which has left many disciplines in a spot of bother. Some federations have also approached the sports ministry to look into matter.
The IOA has also submitted a list of 27 IOA officials as the part of Indian contingent.
