Supriyo wins third silver

Bengal won silver in women's doubles table tennis in the 35th National Games, in Kochi, on Wednesday.

Calcutta/Thiruvananthapuram: Bengal won silver in women's doubles table tennis in the 35th National Games, in Kochi, on Wednesday.

Mousumi Paul and Ankita Das lost 1-3 to Delhi's Neha Agarwal and Manika Batra in the final. The men's team finished with a bronze after losing 2-3 to Devesh Karia and Harmit Desai of Gujarat.

In mixed doubles, Subhajit Saha and Mousumi lost 1-3 to Tamil Nadu's Amal Raj and K. Shamini to clinch the bronze medal.

In swimming, Supriyo Mondal finished a close second by clocking 2:00.80s in men's 200m butterfly stroke final, followed by Madhya Pradesh's Aaron D'Souza. This was Mondal's third silver. Local lad Sajan Prakash continued to create a splash by securing his fourth gold medal in record time.

Prakash, who has already got three gold medals in the last three days, shattered an 18-year-old meet record to emerge on top with a timing of 2:00.69s.

Arvind Kumar bagged silver in men's 96kg wrestling, while Pradeep and Naveen secured bronze medals in 72kg and 65 kg categories, respectively. In kho-kho, the Bengal men's team finished with bronze after losing to Maharashtra in the semis. The women too won the bronze medal, losing to Kerala in the last-four stage.

Meanwhile, the seasoned duo of Saurav Ghosal and Joshana Chinappa expectedly walked away with individual gold medals in squash even as Haryana's grapplers demolished their rivals to sign off with a whopping 18 gold on the fourth day of the competition.

The squash competition saw complete domination by Tamil Nadu as all the finalists in both the men's and women's categories belonged to the state.

First up was women's singles in which Joshana did not have much trouble in sailing past R. Lakshya 11-5, 11-8, 11-4, to grab the gold medal.

The bronze medals went to losing semifinalists - Urwashi Joshi of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh's Sachika Ingale.

In the men's summit clash, Ghosal rallied to beat Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu after conceding the initial advantage. He won the match 4-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 to expectedly walk away with the top honours, while the bronze-medallists were Delhi's Gaurav Nandrajog and Tamil Nadu's Ravi Dixit.

Haryana overtook two-time defending champions SSCB at the top of the medals table.
