SOUMYAJIT TO FACE JAYANTA

Calcutta, June 18 :    Calcutta, June 18:  Soumyajit Sarkar and Jayanta Sarkar will meet in the sub-junior boys' final of the CLT table tennis meet tomorrow. In the semi-finals at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra today, Soumyajit beat Sourav Ghosh 21-15, 21-13, while Jayanta overcame Kuntal Basak 21-15, 20-22, 21-13. A total of 501 have taken part in the championships. Olympic Day run The Bengal Olympic Association will conduct an Olympic Day run in the city on June 23. That day such runs will be held all over, showing solidarity with the Olympic movement. BOA president Ashoke Ghosh said all top athletes of the state, including all medal winners from all disciplines and organisations have been invited to take part. Athletics camp meet Rafiq-ul Islam of Tarakeshwar CC and Ranjita Roy of Hooghly ACC emerged the fastest boy and girl, respectively, in the Athletic Coaches' Organisation of Bengal-organised Millennium Youth Athletic league at Muchisha Haridas Krishi Vidyalaya ground in South 24 Parganas yesterday. Anjali Shee of Haripal Lotus Club, Hooghly, was adjudged Best Athlete, while Soumen Bag of the same club was Best Coach. Shee topped the field in the long jump for girls. THE WINNERS Boys: 100m - Rafiq-ul Islam (Tarakeshwar CC). 400m: Bachhu Durlav (Anami Club, Badkulla). 1500m: Asit Joardar (Cossipore CC). Long jump: Samaresh Maity (Midnapore ATC). Girls: 100m - Ranjita Roy (Hooghly ACC). 400m: Tumpa Bairagi (Muchisha ATC). 1500m: Sujata Samanta (Tarakeshwar CC). Long jump: Anjali Shee (Haripal Lotus Club). BHA felicitation The Bengal Hockey Association today felicitated its president Dinesh Chandra Vajpai for being promoted to the post of director general of West Bengal Police. At a gathering in a city hotel, the association also felicitated the new city police commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty. Present on the occasion were, among others, Messrs Russi Mody, Keshav Dutt, Sailen Manna, Subrata Bhattacharya, Ashoke Ghosh, Abirlal Mukherjee, Shyam Thapa and P. K. Banerjee. Swarupam best Eleven-year-old Swarupam Purakaysta of Mohammedan Sporting was adjudged Man of the Series in the under-12 section of the All-India Pepsi Trophy in Bangalore recently. The opener-cum-wicketkeeper totalled 720 runs in nine matches, his highest being 138 in the final which the city team lost by four runs to Hyderabad XI.
