Ranty injury

Calcutta: East Bengal’s star player Ranty Martins has aggravated an ankle injury and may not play further matches in the CFL till the Derby versus Mohun Bagan, on August 31. Coach Armando Colaco, however, is sticking to his decision of playing different sets of teams, mostly made of youngsters, for the CFL. Meanwhile, the late Sudip Chatterjee will be conferred the Paltu Das Memorial Award on Wednesday.

Chess meet

Ryan show

Irvine: Ryan Lochte held off a fast-finishing Michael Phelps to win the 200 metres individual medley at the US National Championships in Irvine, on Sunday. Lochte touched first in a time of 1:56.50, just ahead of Phelps in 1:56.55.

Peter wins

Glasgow: Peter Gilchrist outclassed Rupesh Shah 688-289 in the final of the Glasgow Open. He had defeated Pankaj Advani and Sourav Kothari in the semi-final and quarter final, respectively.

Sania loses

Montreal: Fourth seeds Sania Mirza and Cara Black lost 6-7 (4), 3-6 to top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the women’s doubles final of the Montreal Cup, on Sunday. In singles final, Agnieszka Radwanska tamed Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2.

Juniors qualify

Calcutta: Adil Kalyanpur (Bangalore), Siddhant Banthia (Pune), Shivani S Ingle (Pune) and Aarja Chakraborty (Noida) qualified for the 13th HSBC Road to Wimbledon National Finals, to be held at the All England Club this month. This is the first year that players from outside the UK are participating. The Wimbledon Foundation teamed up with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to bring The Road to Wimbledon to India in April and the four were selected from the tournament held in New Delhi.

SL squad

Colombo: Uncapped fast bowler Binura Fernando and left-hand opener Dimuth Karunaratne were included in Sri Lanka’s 15-man squad for the second Test against Pakistan starting on Thursday.
