SAI SCHOLARSHIPS IN SCHOOL ROWING

Calcutta, June 22 :    Calcutta, June 22:  The Sports Authority of India (SAI) will award scholarships to members of teams coming first and second in the Servo-Indian Oil 29th inter-school regatta to be held over the Lake Club courses from Sunday to June 30. The organisers today said each member of the first and second-placed teams will get an annual scholarship of Rs 7200. They added the meet has been granted national status by the Rowing Federation of India. The only event in the meet is coaxed fours and the four categories are junior and senior boys and girls. The meet will be held in a league-cum-knockout basis. Thirty teams from 26 schools will fight for the honours. Chess qualifiers Somak Palit, Sayantan Dutta (Goodricke Academy) and Tanmoy Pattanayak and Baisakhi Das (Alekhine Chess Club) have qualified for the National B chess meet beginning in Nagpur on June 30. Sandipan Chanda, Neelotpal Das and Arghyadeep Das (all Goodricke Academy) qualify on the basis of their ratings. Ghoshal wins The city-based Saurav Ghoshal has recently won the under-15 and under-17 crowns in the Wilson Singapore Junior Open squash championship. He had won the Milo All Star Malaysian under-15 title in Kuala Lumpur earlier. Ramit Tandon, also from the city, won the under-11 Classic Plate - for the losing quarter finalists - in the Malaysia meet. The Calcutta Racket Club will felicitate both on Wednesday. CCD table tennis Pallabi Kundu (North 24 Parganas) will meet Sweta Modak (North 24 Parganas ) in the sub-junior girls' final of the CCD table tennis meet. In today's semi-finals at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, national cadet champion Pallabi beat Nabanita Bose (SCZ) 21-14, 21-14, 19-21, 16-21, 21-18. Sweta beat Soumi Mandal (SCZ) 21-8, 21-15, 21-17. OTHER RESULTS: Cadet boys' semis: Santasabuj Chakraborty (North 24 Parganas) bt Shiladitya Nag (NCZ) 17-21, 22-20, 21-12. Kuntal Basak (NCZ) bt Souvik Kar (NCZ) 21-9, 21-8.
