ROY EXTENDS LEAD OVER FIELD

Calcutta, Aug. 9 :    Calcutta, Aug. 9:  Overnight leader Saptarshi Roy of Kishore Bharati consolidated his lead with a win over Somak Palit in the ninth round of The Telegraph Schools? Chess Championship at Gorky Sadan today. Saptarshi now leads the field with 8.5 points - a clear point ahead of Ananya Sarkar, Baishakhi Das and Dushyant Das. Lady luck smiled on Saptarshi yet again in his game against Somak (7) of Mitra Institution. Playing white, Saptarshi obtained an overwhelming position in a Sicilian defence from the opening. He sacrificed a piece for Kingside attack in the middle game. Post mortem analysis proved that the sacrifice was premature. Somak faltered at the crucial moment, failing to find the correct defence and lost. The ninth round belonged to the former national U-10 girls champions Ananya Sarkar and Baisakhi Das. Both upset their FIDE rated opponents. On the second board, Ananya of Julien Day School, Kalyani won against Sayantan Dutta of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Fort William on time in the final time control. Baishakhi Das of Howrah Jogesh Chandra Girls? School won brilliantly with a Queen sacrifice to deliver mate against Soham Das in a Nimzowitch defence. Second seed Rahul Kumar Shandilya of Rajendra Vidyalaya was upset by Naim Arefin Ratul of Bangladesh in a King?s pawn opening. With his second consecutive loss, Rahul is out of reckoning for the top slots. Top seed Bharat Gupta of Rajasthan took his tally to seven points with an emphatic victory over Sumit De (6) of Salkia Hindu High School in the Queen?s Gambit Accepted in 31 moves. Visually Handicapped Pradip Kumar Jha of Louis Braille Memorial School for the Sightless, Uttarpara outclassed Utsav Das while his schoolmate L. N. Adhikari went down fighting against Nilotpal Ghosh. OTHER IMPORTANT RESULTS Nilabh Upadhyay (6.5) lost to Dushyant Das (7.5); Soumya Banerjee (6.5) lost to Syed Ejaz Husain (7); Mary Ann Gomes (6) lost to Punit Jaiswal (7); Mufidul Islam Khan (6) lost to Atanu Nag Majumder (7); Niloy Roy Chaudhuri (7) bt Supriya Majhi (6); Shubham Das (6.5) bt Sourav Bose (5.5); Souvik Chakraborty (5.5) lost to Sanjay Halder (6.5); Kalyan Biswas (6.5) bt Suman Basu (5.5); Ayan Lahiri (6) drew with Santu Mondal (6); Tanmay Pattanayak (6.5) bt Tathagata Banerjee (5.5); Chowparan Saha (6.5) bt Debayan Majumder (5.5); Avik Jain (5.5) lost to Joydeep Dutta (6.5).
