Guwahati: Hyderabad inflicted an innings and 78-run defeat on hosts Assam to send the latter virtually out of contention for a knockout berth in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.

The home side were bundled out for 169 in 73.4 overs in the second innings of their Plate B league match an hour before tea. In reply to Assam’s first innings total of 227, Hyderabad had declared their innings at 474 for six.

Hyderabad wicket-keeper Ibrahim Khaleel’s record 14 dismissals was the highlight of the match.

Like in the first innings, Khaleel accounted for seven dismissals to be eventually named Man of the Match. He took 11 catches and stumped three batsmen, apart from contributing an unbeaten 37. W.R. James (11 catches, 2 stumpings) held the previous first-class record for Matabeleland versus Mashonaland CD in Bulawayo, 1995-96 with 13 dismissals.

In New Delhi, a late start due to foggy weather ended the possibility of an interesting finish in the Elite Group B match between Tamil Nadu and Delhi as the visitors had to settle for three points.
