Calcutta: The spotlight was on Do Dong Hyun. And he made sure he delivered.
Well, Dong wasn't East Bengal's scorer in their 1-0 win against DSK Shivajians, at the Barasat Stadium, on Tuesday, but his overall performance was certainly instrumental behind his team securing full points.
Dong regaining his rhythm is of paramount importance to East Bengal, more so, as they next face table-toppers Bengaluru FC on Saturday.
If Dong did the hard work to shine as playmaker, Ranty Martins got East Bengal the all important goal at the half-hour mark which eventually won them their first home encounter this season.
A Mohammed Rafique right-footer, after a rival player failed to clear Mehtab Hussain's corner, hit the horizontal only to find Ranty. The Nigerian lined himself up perfectly to slot home on the rebound.
Having scored four of the five goals East Bengal have got so far in the competition, Ranty seems on his way back to being the force he used to be during his Dempo days. And it augurs really well for East Bengal.
Not only Dong, there's Bikash Jairu too who gave a good account of himself. Looking at how East Bengal are operating lately, it appears that Bikash has been given the task of being the provider for Ranty and Dong upfront.
The margin could have been bigger for Biswajit Bhattacharya's men against a visiting side that had its moments only towards the end of the match.
Dong thrice came close to scoring. In the eighth minute, he curled in one left-footed free-kick, but Shivajians' goalie Subrata Paul was alert to deflect the ball away. Then again in the second half, he came perilously close to getting his first I-League goal, but it was not to be.
With this victory, East Bengal leapfrogged Mohun Bagan to take the second position in the standings with eight points.
