
Calcutta: Former India footballer and member of the 1962 Asian Games gold medal-winning squad, Prasanta Sinha, died on Tuesday.
Sinha, who used to play in the midfield, was 77, and is survived by daughter Sonali and son-in-law Prateek. He had been admitted to a city hospital and was in a state of coma for the past week.
He was a part of the XI that played in the semi-final and final of the 1962 Asian Games.
He was also a member of the Indian squad that finished runners-up in the 1964 Asian Cup.
At the club level, he represented East Bengal from 1964 to 1971, captaining the club in 1967. During his tenure at East Bengal, the club won the CFL and the IFA Shield thrice, Durand and Rovers Cup twice, and the Bordoloi Trophy once.
Prasanta had also scored in the first CFL Derby at the Eden Gardens in 1967, where East Bengal prevailed 2-1 over arch-rival Mohun Bagan.
One of his most memorable matches was the 1970 IFA Shield game against Pas Club of Iran, where he worked tirelessly in the midfield.
