Mumbai: Reaching the quarter finals is job half done — that’s what Nathan McCullum believes. The New Zealander made it clear on Thursday that for the Black Caps, Friday’s game against Sri Lanka is of utmost importance as a win can help them finish in the top two of Group A.
“We’re obviously excited to make the quarter finals, but our job is not done. We have got a very important game tomorrow (Friday) and we are hoping to go into that with the purpose of winning… It will be great to win and finish in the top two of this group and make it smoother for us in the quarter finals,” Nathan said at a media conference.
Asked about New Zealand’s decent record in big events, he said: “I guess you could say that our record in the big tournaments has been reasonably successful but at the same time we haven’t won a big tournament for quite some time now. We are desperately looking to do it in this tournament. We are working towards that.”
The spinner also dismissed that Wankhede’s short boundaries could bear an impact on the match. “In comparison to some grounds in New Zealand, it’s not that short. I guess the wicket may change slightly if they moisten it up a little bit…”
He also defined a spinner’s role by saying: “ It depends on what type of spinner you are and how you work in the team. I guess there are different types of roles depending on that. My role in this team is to work hard, try and restrict runs and pick up one or two wickets… Then I have a role with the bat as well. Other people have other roles….”
