Here’s a compilation listing the cricketers who made the biggest headlines when they were asked to return home on disciplinary grounds or they themselves chose to leave the tour party...

Lala Amarnath, during the 1936 tour of England, was sent home after a tiff with the manager, Major E. Brittan-Jones.

In 1959, West Indian fast bowler Roy Gilchrist was sent home from the tour of Pakistan for disciplinary reasons after a tiff with captain Gerry Alexander.

During Pakistan’s tour of Australia/New Zealand in 1972/73, both Saeed Ahmed & Mohammed Ilyas were sent home (before the New Zealand tour) for disciplinary reasons.

Navjot Singh Sidhu came back from the 1996 tour of England after a tiff with captain Mohammed Azharuddin.

In May 2006, Zimbabwean Charles Coventry was sent back home from the West Indies for disciplinary reasons.

In 2006, Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar was handed a two-year ban for testing positive for nandrolone. As a result, Shoaib was sent back to Pakistan from India and thus missed the 2006 Champions Trophy.

In September 2007, Akhtar was once again in the centre of a controversy when he was sent home from South Africa for disciplinary reasons following an altercation with fellow paceman Mohammed Asif, in the nets, in Centurion. It was reported by Asif that Akhtar had hit him on his leg with a cricket bat and abused him.

In August 2008, Andrew Symonds was set to play against Bangladesh in Darwin when he was sent home to Queensland after missing the team meeting while out fishing.

In September 2008, Shoaib Akhtar was sent back home from the Heathrow airport because he did not have all the required documents to enter England. He was supposed to play for London county side Surrey.

Symonds, in June 2009, was sent home from the 2009 World Twenty20 in England for breaking the team’s drinking rules.

In February 2013, Matt Coles and Ben Stokes, two members of the England Lions squad, was sent home from the tour of Australia for persistent late-night drinking.

On Monday, Australia stood down vice-captain Shane Watson and three other players — James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja — on disciplinary grounds from the squad for the third Test, in Mohali. Soon after, Watson left for home, to be with his wife, who is in the family way.
