Calcutta: There was relief in the Kerala Blasters camp when the X-ray report of Gurwinder Singh's ankle showed no signs of fracture, on Tuesday evening.
Gurwinder, the East Bengal captain and a regular starter for the Blasters, injured his ankle after colliding with Atletico de Kolkata's Izumi Arata in the sixth minute of the match at the Salt Lake Stadium. However, even his desperate lunge could not stop Arata from giving the hosts the lead.
"The X-ray revealed there was no fracture... The MRI report will give us a clearer picture. But he is definitely ruled out of our next match," Ishfaq Ahmed of the Blasters said late on Tuesday.
Initially, it was thought that Gurwinder might have fractured his right ankle. And if that happened, then ISL II would have been as good as over for the defender.
The effect of Gurwinder's injury was also felt at East Bengal. Alvito D'Cunha was making desperate calls to the defender and sounded relaxed when he came to know that it was not a fracture.
"I spoke to him and I think he should be back in action in the next one month... But you never know. Let the Blasters do the MRI first," Alvito said. Even coach Biswajit Bhattacharjee was a worried man. "I just hope it's not serious," he said.
