Bayern Munich full back Alphonso Davies will not play in his side’s next two Bundesliga games after suffering a hamstring injury, but the Canada international is not in danger of missing the World Cup, the German side said on Sunday.

Davies was taken off just after the hour mark in Bayern’s 3-2 win at Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

“The 22-year-old full back tore a muscle fiber in his right rear thigh during the 3-2 away win at Hertha BSC on Saturday,” Bayern said in a statement.

“Participation in the World Cup in Qatar is not in danger for the Canadian international.”

Davies is one of Canada’s key players at the World Cup, where the country will be making its first appearance since 1986.

Canada has World Cup warmups against Bahrain in Manama on November 11 and Japan on November 17.

Boost for England

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will return to their squad for Wednesday’s English League Cup game against Chelsea after overcoming a shoulder injury that has kept him out of action since September, manager Pep Guardiola said.

The England international has struggled with injuries since joining City from Leeds United during the close season and had surgery for a recurring shoulder issue to cast doubt over his participation in the World Cup.

Guardiola said the 26-year-old as well as club teammate and England right back Kyle Walker were feeling much better. The news of the duo’s progress will come as a boost for England manager Gareth Southgate before he names his squad for the World Cup on Thursday.
