FIH World Cup: England register victory over Spain

England capitalised on their first penalty corner to open their account through Roper Phil as early as the 10th minute of the match

In-form England registered an emphatic 4-0 victory over a lacklustre Spain in a Pool D match of the FIH men’s hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here on Thursday.

England capitalised on their first penalty corner to open their account through Roper Phil as early as the 10th minute of the match. Spain also earned their first penalty corner four minutes later, but failed to grab the scoring opportunity.

In the second quarter, England again stamped their authority as Condon David struck their second goal in the 21st minute through a brilliant field goal.

Spain earned their second penalty corner in the 38th minute, but failed to sound the board. In the fourth quarter, England made it 3-0 through Bandurak Nicholas in the 50th minute. They added the fourth goal to their tally through Ansell Liam in the 51st minute.

Earlier, Malaysia beat world No. 9 New Zealand 3-2 in a group C match.

New Zealand came from two goals behind to make it 2-2 in the final quarter. However, Malaysia struck in the 57th minute to win the match.
