Calcutta: With East Bengal finishing their I-League campaign on a disastrous note, coach Eelco Schattorie confirmed parting ways with the club.

Talks of a new man at the helm had started circulating even before the I-League was into its final round, with names of Santosh Kashyap, Subhas Bhowmick, Trevor James Morgan and Abdulaziz Moshood floating around. However, on Wednesday, Eelco minced no words to describe the torrid time he faced during his tenure as East Bengal coach.

"I feel I failed and I take full responsibility for choosing to take this job. I will no longer be the coach of East Bengal. I will never make the mistake of choosing a club without talking to its officials again.

"The deal with East Bengal was done in a very few days after I spoke to one of the officials about my financial demands. But on arrival, I found out that this club was without any leadership as Nitu (Debabrata Sarkar), one of its top officials, was in jail. This is something dreadful for a coach.

"And at that moment, different people were competing with each other trying to be on top," the Dutch told The Telegraph.

While discipline in the dressing room was an issue, communication between staff and management is also not up to the desired level in East Bengal, Eelco claimed. "Before coming to East Bengal, the only information I had about the team was from a few players I had spoken to and their concern was the discipline in the dressing room.

"You also require a decent communication between staff and management, but that is very poor and I will say we both are to blame... I always look at myself first. I did try to reach out through Alvito (D'Cunha), but he did not have the power to arrange things.

"I can cite examples that can prove how unprofessional things are, but I don't want to do so. I just want to move on and wish the club all the best," he said.

Eelco's next destination seems to be a club in Europe. "My future is most likely in Europe, at a higher level. I will be starting off very soon. It will have a professional staff and compete with teams that played in the Europa League and Champions league.

"Calcutta is a world in itself and I don't see it changing. That Mohun Bagan are I-League champions is great for them, but time will tell if it's the beginning of a stable footballing future here or just a lucky year for Bagan," he concluded.
