Calcutta: Diptayan Ghosh of South Point beat Sayantan Das of Scottish Church Collegiate School in the 23rd The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship at the Gorky Sadan, on Monday.

The meet is sponsored by Himani Sona Chandi Chyawanprash, in association with NIIT (nguru), and is organised by Alekhine Chess Club.

Diptayan, Sayantan, Suvankar Maity and Subhradipta are in a four-way lead with eight points each.

Diptayan employed Catalan Opening but black went for a sort of Dutch formation. Diptayan slowly outplayed his opponent and finally Sayantan, who even tried for a piece sacrifice to obtain a draw, resigned on 40th move.

The day saw two upsets. Chandrasish Majumder of St Xavier’s was defeated by Suvankar Maity of Behala Asya Bidyamandir. Chandrasish took several risks but Suvankar (1823) kept his cool and avoided all pitfalls and eked out a win in 48 moves.

Abhrapratim Manna of Don Bosco, Park Circus, lost to Subhradipta Das of Aditya Academy, Dum Dum. In a better position, Abhrapratim made a blunder and lost the game.

Kumar Sanu of DPS, Dhanbad, drew with Kaustav Kundu of South Point. White had a better position throughout but black somehow managed to hold the balance.
