Amit Mishra (7/106) became the seventh Indian to take 7 or more wickets in his debut Test match. However the best match figures by an Indian in his debut Test is by Narendra Hirwani (16/136) vs West Indies in Madras, 1987-88.
Ricky Ponting has now lost 2 of the three Tests as captain of Australia on Indian soil.
This is the 38th Test played between India and Australia on Indian soil. With this win India and Australia now have 12 wins each (Ind win 31.50%), 13 being drawn and one tied. It may be noted that Pakistan have the highest win percentage (35.00) over the Australians at home having won 7 of their 20 matches.
Zaheer Khan became the fourth Indian bowler to take 3 wickets in 4 balls in a Test match. The first to do so was Ravi Shastri who did it in his debut match versus New Zealand in Wellington, 1980-81. Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble are the other two bowlers.
M.S. Dhoni became the third Indian captain to win his first 2 Tests as captain. The others being Sachin Tendulkar, who had wins against Australia in Delhi and South Africa in Ahmedabad in 1996-97, and Sourav Ganguly, who had wins against Bangladesh in Dhaka and Zimbabwe in Delhi in 2000-01.
The win by 320 runs is now India’s biggest win against Australia in Tests in terms of runs. The previous biggest margin was when they had beaten the Aussies by 222 runs in Melbourne 1977-78.
M.S. Dhoni became the third wicketkeeper captain to win a Man of the Match award. The other two being Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower (vs Pakistan in Harare, 1994-95) and Tatenda Taibu (vs Bangladesh in Dhaka, 2004-05).
