South Zone quicks helped their side bounce back as they reduced West Zone to 129/7 on the second day of the Duleep Trophy final at the Chinnaswamy in Bangalore on Thursday.

Still trailing by 84 runs, West have already lost some momentum and could go on to face an uphill task if they are unable to reduce the deficit to less than 50. Earlier, South were all out for 213 in their first innings.

Once Prithvi Shaw and Harvik Desai took West to 97/1, they were poised for a first-innings lead at least as the conditions too remained bright.

Shaw blunted the South pacers as he produced a slew of sparkling shots. Vidwath Kaverappa pitched the ball on his driving arc, and a cover drive followed. Vasuki Koushik marginally over-pitched a delivery and Shaw produced a straight drive.

The 65-minute rain break that arrived in the second session gave South a chance to take a step back and revisit their strategies. Their bowlers took to the field with a marked difference in approach following the break.

Vijayakumar Vyshak came from around the wicket and peppered both Shaw and Harvik with short-pitched stuff. The West batters looked a tad uneasy then.

Shaw was done in by Vyshak after Kaverappa had Harvik caught behind. Thereafter, West slumped to 124/7 as Kaverappa ran through their middle order, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession.

Brief scores: South Zone 213 (S. Mulani 3/29). West Zone 129/7 (P. Shaw 65; V. Kaverappa 4/44). Stumps, Day 2.
