Patna: North Bengal shocked Bengal to reach the final of the team events (women category) in the 75th Senior National and Inter-State table tennis tournament, at the Patliputra Sports Complex, here, on Wednesday.
North Bengal, who last reached the final in 2006, will face Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) on Thursday.
The star-studded PSPB team virtually had a cakewalk against AAI. While Madhurika Patkar, the current India No. 1, thrashed AAI’s Krittwika Sinha Roy 12-10, 11-5, 11-7, Neha Aggarwal defeated Nikhat Bhanu of AAI in four sets (11-2, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10).
North Bengal, on the other hand, shocked the Bengal team, comprising many top national-level players, including Mouma Das, Poulami Ghatak, and Sutirtha Mukherjee.
The biggest setback for the Bengal team was the defeat of Poulami. Sukanya Bose of North Bengal defeated her 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5. Similarly, Mouma was beaten by Sagarika Mukherjee in three sets (13-11, 11-7, 12-10).
In the men’s section, PSPB reached the final defeating Gujarat. They will take on Bengal, who drubbed Haryana.
For PSPB, national champion Soumyajit Ghosh trounced Jignesh Jaishwal 11-3, 11-8, 11-6 and Sharath Kamal defeated Devesh Karia 10-12, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7.
Bengal, on the other hand, outplayed Haryana 3-0.
