Calcutta, Aug. 20 :
There is so much in common, yet so much different, in the two teams which will meet in the Asian Club Cup first round match at the Salt Lake stadium tomorrow. Much is at stake for ?home? team Mohun Bagan, as much as is there for Muktijoddha Sansad Krira Chakra.
The teams show a good amount of talent each, and a fair track record. On the field tomorrow, though, neither is willing to take any chances, or even think of a ?draw?.
Shafiq-ul Islam Manik, who has been coaching the Bangladesh team for the last three years, showed great respect for Mohun Bagan. ?It is an established team with good sponsors, own stadium, a solid set of players and good spirit,? he said. ?Moreover, its home, so the basic advantage is there. But onfield, it?s just football.?
Mohun Bagan coach Syed Nayeemuddin felt the same. ?There is no alternative but to win tomorrow,? he said. ?We must. Inshallah Emeka Achilefu is fit now.?
Achilefu, however, will not be new to the Bangladesh team. ?That long-haired player, isn?t he? From Bengal Mumbai?? asked Manik. Wrong on the first count (he has cut his hair since), right on the second.
Nayeem, though said that is not quite right. ?This is not the same player they saw (in the McDowell Cup). Achilefu today is a much improved, fitter and more serious player. There is a big difference.?
Muktijoddha, now running fourth in the Super Four stage of the League (three matches to go), have a good midfield with skipper Jewel Rana in command. Having played here earlier, Rana has a fair idea of Calcutta soccer. He has scored three goals in the Bangladesh league so far and is in fine nick. The last line of defence has a great Calcutta player ? Arpan De.
For De, it is ?like another East Bengal?Mohun Bagan match.? That statement alone is proof of his seriousness. ?It is not like I am playing an international match, for a foreign team, and all that,? he said.
The defence also has the other Nigerian of the team ? Alio Rehman. He is dependable, it is heard.
Manik said his team is a bit tired after having gone through the entire gamut of the league?s first phase. That, of course, translates to being ?in form? for Nayeem. Manik agreed, too. ?Sure you can say that as well, in soccer terms.?
There has been a setback for the Bangladeshi team, however. Their Nigerian striker Efinai has not been able to make it, out with an injury. Efiani has scored seven goals in the league so far, behind top-scorer Ahmed Imtiaz Naquib?s 10. ?It?s XI players to the team,? Manik tried to make light of this setback.
That, however, also means the pressure will be much more for Naquib in the forefront. Masood Rana is the other person who will surely take up more responsibility way down.
Manik knows the Chima Okeries and the Achilefus, and is very respectful of Satyajit Chatterjee. He has also heard of Samuel Omollo. ?No videos, no first hand knowledge of most ? we virtually go in blind and then adjust maybe after the first 20-25 minutes, maybe at the interval.?
That is Nayeem?s disadvantage too. ?I should be able to read them by the interval,? he said.
Nayeem remained dissatisfied with the condition of the Mohun Bagan ground where both teams had to practise today. ?It makes you injury prone,? he said. ?Too much water and mud,? commented Manik.
However, rains and slush are all a part of footballing life on both sides of the border. That constant can be dealt with if Nayeem manages to find a solution for his slurring defence line.
Basically, Nayeem would want to go all out to cover up for his defensive inabilities. That could work wonders and could also work to the benefit of a still-probing Bangladeshi side. The early strike could seal the day for the teams. Abdul Khalique will be the free midfielder.
Visa problems
Meanwhile, there has been a bit of holdup in the visa clearance of three Muktijoddha players. Midfielder Tushar, a first XI player, has not been able to get his visa. Skipper Rana said Tushar was ?much needed? in the team. Defender Mansoor Ali too will not be around because of a similar problem.
Biplab, the third goalkeeper, has been able to avail of only a road visa and is expected tomorrow morning.
