Calcutta: Arindam Ghosh's ability as a prolific run scorer at the club level has never been doubted.
Making a move to the Railways for not getting enough opportunities in the state team here, Ghosh was one of the top scorers in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy.
He may not have had much success in Ranji matches in the last two seasons, but on Monday, he came up with a wonderfully composed 125 for Mohun Bagan in the CAB Super League final at Eden Gardens to compound Bhowanipore's problems.
And on top of that, the knock makes Ghosh the very first centurion in this first-ever four day pink-ball tie on Indian soil. It's something he will certainly cherish for a long time.
Bagan were in the driving seat on Sunday itself, as Shami had ripped through the Bhowanipore batting line-up in their first innings. On Day III, Ghosh churned out a knock that took the game out of Bhowanipore's reach. At stumps on Monday, Bhowanipore were wobbling at 132/6, with still 364 to get on the final day.
Yes, the wicket looks to have eased up a fair bit. Bhowanipore batsmen too showed stomach for a fight at the initial stages of their second essay. Subham Chatterjee (50) with his aggressive knock fought back only to throw it away, trying to be over-attacking. And in the last hour of play, they lost as many as four wickets. Bagan are almost sure of adding one more trophy to their kitty. The pink ball once again had its effect under lights.
"When playing against the red ball, the shine on one side makes it easier to track. But in case of this pink ball, the shine on both sides is making it difficult for the batsmen. So, I'm really happy to have scored a century under such a situation," Ghosh said.
Taking a five-for earlier, Shami would always remain a threat irrespective of how flat the wicket becomes. On the third day too, Shami consistently darted the ball in towards the batsmen and extracted sharp, awkward bounce. What's more important for his own point of view is that Shami is hungry to bowl and strive for more wickets.
Having taken two wickets so far in Bhowanipore's second innings, Shami bowled 15 overs at a stretch on either side of the second and third sessions. "I am just focused on running and bowling at the moment... Will think of the wickets and runs later," Shami said.
Even if he couldn't make further inroads, Shami bowled one rising delivery that hit Parthasarathi Bhattacharya just under the rib cage, forcing him out of the ground.
Brief scores: Mohun Bagan 299 & 349 (Arindam Ghosh 125; Ayan Bhattacharya 6/96). Bhowanipore 153 & 132/6. Match to continue.
