Calcutta: Artesia, the 5-2 second favourite in the betting — ridden by Christopher Alford — lapped up the gifted Classic, the 2,400m Calcutta Oaks, on Saturday. The victory followed, courtesy Trevor Patel’s option for a circuitous route, instead of rail side passage, which the 11-10 course-favourite, Striking, had been occupying, until two furlongs from the winning-post. Alford was quick to grab the galloping room and raced away to a ‘neck’ victory, and also to present trainer Manvendra Singh his first Classic success. Alford finished the day with a treble.RESULTS
