Calcutta, May 8 :
Calcutta, May 8:
It is probably the end of the road for Jo Paul Ancheri, or the former India captain seems heading towards a cul-de-sac.
His leg injury refuses to heal. And as if that was not enough, that 'celebrated duo' syndrome that he enjoyed along with statemate I.M. Vijayan, cuts no ice no more. Nobody is interested in hiring this game-making line, nobody in the Maidan, at least.
He may be struggling to get a team for the ensuing season but Ancheri has almost decided that he will not be returning to this city any more. That chapter, he told The Telegraph over telephone from Thrissur Wednesday, is virtually over.
The Keralite, however, is not giving up on his career. 'I'm ready to play even for a second-division club, if they are ready to pay me more', he said. The desperation is understandable, so is the grief.
'I am recuperating. But it will take me at least another one and-a-half months to be match-fit,' Ancheri said.
That depends on how many such 'matches' he will be able to play in next season.
East Bengal, his previous assignment, were reportedly frustrated with the player's injury-prone contribution and are not keen on extending the contract with him this season.
With National League champions Mohun Bagan also not interested in him, the play-maker's stint with Calcutta seems over.
'We asked him (Ancheri) to call us up by April 30, but he did not get in touch,' an East Bengal official said. 'We also made the effort of ringing him up once the deadline was over, but we did not find him at home.' The club official also took umbrage at Ancheri's insistence on keeping Vijayan with him.
Ancheri claimed he has got offers from Vasco SC and Mahindra United, but refused to go into details. Whatever his decision, he just might want to have a last go with East Bengal before saying his final goodbye. 'The decision will also be based on the financial perspective,' he said.
Ancheri is finally getting to know that the 'duo' syndrome is perhaps pulling him down too. Vijayan, once India's most charismatic striker has been rather inconsistent lately and has been dubbed a major failure for the past couple of years. Ancheri seems aware that Vijayan's lack of form, couple with some family problems may lead to an unwelcome break in the phenomenal bond.
