Mohali, Oct. 13 :     Left-armer Geoff Allott, the most successful bowler-ever in any one edition of the World Cup, may be called up for the five-match India vs New Zealand one-day series. The matches begin November 5 (Rajkot), straight after the on-going Test series. Allott, who bagged a record 20 wickets during this summer?s World Cup, almost single-handedly carrying New Zealand to the semi-finals, broke down in the Test engagements against England, which followed the quadrennial showpiece. He played the first two Tests, picking up seven wickets, before being rendered hors de combat with a stress fracture in the back. But that was in July and Allott, who turns 28 in December, is much better now. Indeed, captain Stephen Fleming and coach David Trist, while talking to The Telegraph last evening, indicated Allott could join the likes of Roger Twose on the flight to India by month-end. Some of the Test ?specialists? will return home. Specifically, both Trist and Fleming declared Allott had a ?good chance.? Of course, neither said Allott?s call-up was guaranteed. In case Allott doesn?t make it, his comeback will be in the home series vs the West Indies. New Zealand, incidentally, have already been ?hit? by veteran Gavin Larsen?s retirement yesterday. Larsen would definitely have been called up for the one-dayers. Besides Rajkot, the matches will be held in Hyderabad (November 8), Gwalior (November 11), Guwahati (November 14) and New Delhi (November 17).
