Calcutta: Five meet records were created on the final day of the 68th State Athletics Championships, at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

Safikul Mondal of East Bengal clocked 10.3 seconds in 100 metres dash, bettering Rahamottah Mollah's mark of 10.4 seconds. "I created a record in the state meet for the first time. Obviously, I am happy," Mondal, who won gold for the fifth consecutive time, said.

Himashree Roy of Eastern Railway Sports Association (ERSA) timed 11.60 seconds in women's 100 metres, bettering Ranjita Roy's mark of 11.7 seconds set in 2006. "It's a nice feeling," she said.

Raj Barua of North 24 Parganas hogged the limelight in the 400 metres hurdles with a timing of 55.6 seconds.

Arnab Sarkar of North 24 Parganas heaved 15.63 metres in shot put, while his district-mate Debanjana Dey threw a distance of 36 metres in discuss throw.

North 24 Parganas emerged as champions in the men's category, while East Bengal came second. Police Athletic Club won the men's open category with 85 points.

In the women's category, there was a controversy. While the organisers announced North 24 Parganas and East Bengal as joint winners with 43 points, East Bengal cried foul.

According to an East Bengal official, they had actually logged 47 points and decided to send a letter to the organisers. "Well, they haven't given us anything in writing. We told them to give us so and then we will see.

"If the mistake is on our part, then we will rectify. But we haven't got any letter as yet," West Bengal Athletic Association secretary Kamal Maitra said.
