Projecting movies and videos from a mobile device or computer to your television screen has just got a lot easier with the vastly improved second generation streaming stick Teewe. This HDMI dongle, launched by Mango Man Consumer Electronics, a Bangalore-based startup comprising a team of young engineers, turns your television set into a smart TV at a fraction of the cost.

This is a totally Indian product in contrast to other similar dongles in the market such as the Chromecast or ezCast. It looks like an oversized pendrive and works with a HDMI port on any TV and a WiFi connection to stream online content. It has a premium WiFi chip with an internal antenna for smooth streaming. An extra cable is included in case the HDMI port is in an awkward position on the TV.

The Teewe app that is required to stream media is available on all mobile platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows. Computer users have the option of streaming media in two ways. You either use the Chrome browser extension in conjunction with the web app - which I really liked -or the desktop app. The desktop app is available for Windows XP, Windows 7 or later, Mac OSX and for Linux.

You can connect multiple devices to Teewe and search through and control everything on these devices. Also, Teewe comes with a power adapter, which is not available with the other dongles. The advantage here is you can connect the Teewe to an electric socket while it is plugged into your TV.

Teewe is very easy to set up. Just connect the Teewe dongle to the TV and power it up with the adapter. Download the Teewe app to your smartphone or tablet. Follow the on-screen instructions. If you use an Android device when you download the app, it automatically detects the Teewe dongle and prompts you to connect by entering your WiFi password.

If you are using an Apple device then the process takes a bit longer. First disconnect your phone from your WiFi network and join the Teewe network. Next configure the WiFi for your home network on the dongle. All this is done from your mobile device. Just follow the onscreen instructions. Your iPhone or iPad may not detect the wireless signal from the Teewe dongle at first try. Just move closer to your TV.

Teewe works a little differently on iOS and Android for media stored on the device. For Android, Teewe can locate all media such as movies, music, photos and videos on the phone or tablet and play it on the TV. However, for iOS the app can only project the photos.

For both platforms, playing YouTube videos on the TV is a breeze. You can also watch a lot of full-length movies that Teewe is giving away for free.

If you have a lot of media stored on your computer, use the desktop app that can be downloaded from www.tee we.in. Point your music and videos folder to the app and it will aggregate everything and play it on your TV. However, I had a little difficulty with the app for the Mac as it took hours to scan my music folder.

The feature I really liked was that I could queue a bunch of YouTube videos using my computer and play them on my TV while putting my computer to sleep.

Teewe costs Rs 2,399 and is cheaper than Google's Chromecast and the China-made ezCast.
