Pixelbook plans are reportedly being shelved

At the moment, it seems, the focus is on the upcoming Pixel Watch and in building an Android tablet due to ship next year

Google is reportedly cancelling/putting on hold its next version of Pixelbook laptop. A new report from The Verge says the company has decided to cancel the follow-up to the 2019 Pixelbook Go and is moving team members to other departments at Google.

Only a few months ago, Google mentioned that it would “do Pixelbooks in the future”. At the same time, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh had said that the Chromebook market has changed since 2017 when the original Pixelbook launched.

Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a July memo: “In some cases, that means consolidating where investments overlap and streamlining processes. In other cases, that means pausing development and re-deploying resources to higher priority areas.” We guess the Pixelbook team has become a part of consolidation and redeployment.

The story of Chromebook dates back to 2013 with the original Chromebook Pixel. Then came the Pixelbook in 2017, which had its own problems. Then arrived 2019’s Pixelbook Go, a traditional laptop.

At the moment, it seems, the focus is on the upcoming Pixel Watch and in building an Android tablet due to ship next year. Google is planning its next big event in New York on October 6 where the focus will be on the new Pixel phones. The Pixel 7 appears to be a pretty straightforward continuation of the previous generation of phones, but it will be the watch that everyone will want to see.
