Bhubaneswar: The state government has allocated a budget of Rs 30 crore for setting up a multi-storey parking lot, food court and development of the nearby bus stand for Nanadankanan zoo.

Forest and environment secretary Suresh chandra Mohapatra made the announcement on the zoo's 58th foundation day on Friday.

"The toy train and ropeway service is likely to resume in the next financial year. Besides, construction of an approach road to the botanical garden will also start shortly. A major portion of the Bhubaneswar-Nandankanan road doesn't have street lights and this stretch will be illuminated. While half of the cost will be borne by Bhubaneswar Development Authority, the rest will be borne by the zoo," said Mohapatra.

The ropeway service was stopped in February 2011 while the toy train service was called off in 2014. Both the facilities used to be major draws.

A Himalayan black bear enclosure was also inaugurated at the zoo on Friday. The enclosure has been built over 1,350sqm at an estimated cost of Rs 35 lakh. The enclosure has two feeding chambers, a waterfall with a pool and a visitors' path.

Mohapatra also said that the state government is planning to extend the zoo area to start jungle safari.
