Bhubaneswar: Several government agencies have come together to finalise the modalities of a City Festival to promote the Men's Hockey World Cup that is scheduled to be held here in November.

The festival will also include fashion shows and musical concerts, among others, and hosted jointly by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Bhubaneswar Development Authority, and the departments of tourism and culture, and textile, handloom and handicraft.

Round the year, the civic body, along with other agencies, had organised Patha Utsav or Raahagiri, a street festival. But development authority vice-chairman Krishan Kumar said the City Festival would specifically aim at branding the world cup.

"It will include components of the state's tourism, culture and heritage. This particular festival will put special emphasis on generating public interest for the event," said Kumar.

The development authority official told The Telegraph that a meeting was scheduled for later this week to discuss the modalities and finalise everything.

"We will do everything to successfully host the world cup. The festival is part of those efforts. It will be an event for all ages, aimed at gathering and entertaining the residents," he said.

The festival will be a one-of-its-kind public festival after Patha Utsav or Raahagiri aimed to promote non-motorised transport.

"People need special tools for entertainment. They are bored of conventional things. Patha Utsav was a major hit and it should have been continued," said Rama Devi Women's University student Ankita Panda.

"But the new plan sounds good and I will look forward to it," she added.

Sources said the festival would be held periodically.

"We will try to incorporate all sorts of entertainment tools and are hopeful of starting the festival in the next two to three months," said a development authority official.
