Bhubaneswar, Dec 27: Akashvani today released a music CD on Baidehisha Bilasa - one of the greatest works by 19th century poet Upendra Bhanja.
Gajapati Maharaja of Puri Dibyasingha Deb released the CD at a special programme held at Jayadev Bhavan here. " Baidehisha Bilasa is a timeless creation by "Kabi Samrat" (emperor of poets) Upendra Bhanja. By offering it in a musical form, the All India Radio has begun a new tradition of listening to ancient Odia literature," the Gajapati said.
He added that Upendra Bhanja was considered the greatest poet of Odia literature and was awarded the title "Kabi Samrat". "Today's generation must take the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the works of the Kabi Samrat, whose poems are relevant even in present times," the Gajapati said.
Another CD, consisting of a collection of 35 songs rendered by singer, lyricist and composer the late Akshaya Mohanty, was also released during the programme. Mohanty became an approved lyricist at All India Radio, Cuttack, in 1956. By 1959, he became an approved composer for All India Radio.
All India Radio director general Fayaz Shahryar said the songs preserved by Prasar Bharati Archives in New Delhi connects past with present and was bound to enthuse the younger generation. He added that Akshaya Mohanty remains one of the most prolific musicians of the state. "Despite lacking professional skills in music, Akshaya Mohanty went on to win Jayadev Award, the highest state award in movies," he added.
Shahryar said more such compilations by the singer would be released by Akashvani in future.
