Jajpur: Police on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly raping a woman on the false promise of marriage.
Sudam Kumar Malik of Kuransh village in the district's Rahamba panchayat was arrested after a 25-year-old woman lodged a police complaint. The survivor alleged that the man had maintained a physical relationship with her for five years after promising marriage, but later refused to marry her.
In her complaint, the survivor, a resident of Kalan, said Malik had come in contact with her around five years ago. She fell in love with the accused, who later developed a physical relationship with her. But after five years of sexual "exploitation", when the woman asked Malik to get married, he refused. The victim approached the police when she learnt that Malik was planning to marry another woman. "We had been in a relationship for the past five years. Malik promised to marry me and started a physical relationship. He exploited me sexually on several occasions," she said in her complaint to the police.
"On Monday, I came to know that he was planning to marry another woman. When the I asked him to marry me, he refused."
Based on the complaint, the police started a probe and registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
They arrested the accused from his residence late on the preceding night of Monday and Tuesday.
"He raped the woman several times after promising to marry her. But after five years of sexual exploitation, when the woman asked him to marry her, the accused refused," investigating officer Madhumita Mohanty said.
The police conducted a medical examination of both the accused and the woman and produced Malik in a local court. He was later remanded in judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.
