Cuttack, July 8: Tension prevailed at Ravenshaw University following an attack on some boarders of East Hostel by some outsiders on Saturday night.

One student has suffered minor injury in the assault by the outsiders who have also allegedly ransacked property inside the East Hostel around 11.30pm yesterday.

The incident occurred when a group of boarders were sitting outside the hostel and were attacked by six youths, including four outsiders. Two students of the varsity were also allegedly involved in the attack.

“We had just finished our dinner and were going to our respective rooms when six youths entered the hostel and attacked us,” said Siddhart Tanmany Das, a second-year English honours student.

Das has sustained injuries on his left leg after he was attacked by iron rods.

Sources said the attack was the fallout of an ongoing dispute between two groups of students of the premier educational institution.

Demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the attack, a group of students staged a demonstration today on the campus. Moreover, the students are protesting against the callous attitude of the authorities, who have failed to address their grievances.

“Despite the violence, neither any official nor the hostel warden came to the spot to enquire about the incident,” said Rakesh Rout, another third-year student.

Rout said the university officials did not take any step towards the security of the campus despite several incidents of violence by outsiders. On the other hand, East Hostel warden Nachiketa Das has said that because of lack of concrete security measures such incidents were happening on the campus.
