Tutor held for rape

Police on Saturday arrested a 30-year man for raping his eight-year-old student.

Kendrapara/Jajpur: Police on Saturday arrested a 30-year man for raping his eight-year-old student.

Ganesh Nayak, a native of Ambapada, also recorded the crime on his smartphone.

The accused, who used to teach the girl at her home, raped her last week when when her parents were away.

The police said both the accused and the suvivor had undergone medical tests.

The police said Nayak, who confessed to the crime, had been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 376, (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012.

Sub-divisional police officer Rajib Lochan Panda said sections 67 and 67 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, were also slapped on him. Nayak has been remanded to judicial custody.

Cases of sexual abuse of minor girls have recent seen a sharp spike in Odisha recently and the issue even found an echo in the Assembly.

In another incident in Jajpur district, a youth was arrested by the police on Saturday for allegedly attempting to rape a married woman at Belapala village.

The accused Harekrushna Behera belonged to the same village, the police said.

The survivor, who suffered injuries after being assaulted by the accused during his rape bid, was initially admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital.

According to the survivor's complaint to the police, the incident took place on Friday morning when she had gone to an isolated place to relieve herself.

"Finding her alone, the accused attempted to rape her. When she protested, he fled from the scene after physically assaulting her," the police said.

"The survivor, who has a two-year-old child, suffered injuries on her back and is undergoing treatment," said Binjharpur police station inspector-in-charge Suchitrabrija Das.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and started an investigation.

After collecting local intelligence and technical surveillance, a police team arrested Behera from his hideout on Saturday.
