Berhampur, Jan. 20: A 10-year-old wild bear and a two-year-old infant bear were run over by a speeding train near Subalaya railway level crossing, around 40km away from here this morning.
The spot where the wild bear was killed is only one km away from Subalaya railway level crossing where six wild elephants were hit by the speeding Coromondal Express on the night of December 29.
“The wild bear was run over by an unknown speeding train at Kantapada between Rambha and Humma railway station in Rambha police station area. The incident occurred around 3am. The carcass of the mother bear was lying near the rail track and the injured infant was lying near her,” said Khallikote forest ranger Bijaya Kumar Hota Ranger. The forest officials buried the mother bear on the spot. The injured infant bear was rescued and taken to the veterinary hospital at Rambha for treatment. “We shifted the bear to Nandankanan zoo in Bhubaneswar,” said Hota.
Veterinary surgeon Mohan Patnaik, who conducted the post-mortem of the mother bear and treated the infant bear, said the train hit the head of the mother bear and the infant suffered an injury to her left leg.
