Bhubaneswar, Dec. 27: Burglars broke into four flats of a building near Kalarahang in Infocity police station limits and decamped with valuables worth lakhs last night.
None of the residents were present when the incident took place.
While one of the flat owners alleged that robbers decamped with gold ornaments weighing 100 grams, silver weighing 700 grams and Rs 21,000 cash, police said that the assessment of stolen articles of the other three flats could not be done as their owners were not present.
The incident came to light after one of the flat owners found the lock of her apartment broken when she returned home today.
"I had gone to my son's place near Patia yesterday. When I returned home today, I found the grill and door of my flat broken. My house was also ransacked and items stolen," alleged Suniti Panda.
The security guard deployed at the apartment last night denied having seen anybody enter the apartment. "I went home this morning after my duty was over. I have not seen anybody enter the building," said Ashok Baral, the security guard.
However, closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage obtained by the police showed a man leaving the apartment at 2.30pm with his face covered.
"We have started an investigation after obtaining the CCTV footage. However, the identity of the man could not be ascertained as his face was covered," said deputy commissioner of police, Satyabrata Bhoi.
The police are suspecting the involvement of security guards of the apartment.
"We will interrogate the guards to find out how they failed to notice anyone entering the flats," said a police official.
The flat owners, however, suspect the involvement of house keeping staff members in the incident.
"The goons were well aware of the fact that the residents were not present and the apartments were empty. As most of the owners are senior citizens, the cops should ensure our safety and arrest the accused as shortly as possible," said an elderly resident of the building.
