Bhubaneswar: Director-general of police R.P. Sharma on Tuesday requested the railway to install CCTV cameras and baggage scanners at various stations and selected trains during a meeting with rail officials.

Sharma, who chaired the meeting of the State Level Security Committee for Railways, also discussed issues such as security of properties and passengers, and threat of Left-wing activists.

Committee members said it was decided that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) would register a criminal case whenever there was a rail roko and take legal action.

"We requested the railway authorities to take steps to improve infrastructure of the Government Railway Police (GRP) by constructing and repairing official and residential buildings. We have also decided to take steps for prompt registration of criminal cases at the appropriate police stations even when the passengers submit their reports to the onboard railway officials or any other station so that investigation can start without delays," said Shrama.

The railway's additional director-general P. Acharya said several issues related to safety and security of passengers as well as steps for improving infrastructure were discussed. "There were suggestions for repair of residential buildings and existing GRP outposts and installation of CCTV cameras in high-profile trains such as Rajdhani and Duronto. We also discussed the creation of a standard operating procedure during disaster management that would involve railway officials, RPF personnel, members of the railway engineering and medical wing, GRP, civil administration and fire service team," said Acharya.

The committee was recently formed under a home ministry directive and includes senior officials from the RPF, Intelligence Bureau and Odisha police. "It was decided to create a bomb disposal squad with the RPF. We also suggested that the GRP and the RPF should hold regular meetings at the SP level for better co-ordination and co-operation," said a committee member.
