Bhubaneswar, Sept. 11: The undergraduate syllabus is in for a complete revamp from the next academic session commencing in July next year.

Utkal University has decided to restructure the syllabus at all its affiliate colleges to suit the demands of competitive exams.

The varsity, which will organise a two-day workshop this weekend to chalk out a revised syllabus, has invited principals and faculty members from around 150 constituent institutions, including autonomous colleges.

“There will be intense brainstorming sessions, in which expert teachers in every subject will suggest changes in the existing, outdated syllabi. We are also planning to implement a choice-based credit system and continuous evaluation format for the affiliated degree colleges,” said Utkal postgraduate council chairman P.K. Mishra.

The choice-based credit system, which is in place at top-notch universities of the country, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, will give an opportunity to students to choose optional subjects according to their interests. The continuous evaluation system, on the other hand, will feature regular internal assessment in the form of weekly and monthly tests, in addition to the semester or annual exams.

Besides, there is also a plan to make seminars and paper presentations compulsory in all subjects.

“The prime objective of these systems will be to ensure that students take their studies seriously and attend college regularly. Regular tests will also enhance competitive spirit among them and help them crack national-level entrance tests,” Mishra said.
