Bhubaneswar, Aug. 25: Tension erupted on Utkal University campus after a group of student allegedly attacked another.
Two first-year students of the university were allegedly attacked by the other group and sustained minor injuries.
Falguni Singh, a first-year student of personnel management and industrial relations (PMIR), said that he was attacked by a group of seniors.
“A group of seniors abused me and later assaulted me with sticks and threatened me not to befriend with other seniors. When a few of my friends intervened they also assaulted them,” Singh said.
He also said that Soubhagya Bag, a first-year student of statistics was also attacked.
However, students of the other group denied the allegations and said that a particular group with the help of outsiders was trying to create disturbances on the campus.
“We had argument with a few outsiders who are creating disturbances on the campus and we did not assault any one. However, they are fabricating the matter,” said Tanmay Swain, former president of the university.
Later, police sent both of them for medical examination.
“We have started an investigation on receiving a complaint from the students. In order to prevent further tension, adequate police forces have been deployed on the campus,” said an official of Saheed Nagar police station.
With elections of the students’ unions of all colleges and universities in Odisha due on September 29, students demanded the police to restrict the entry of outsiders into the campus.
The university had witnessed several group clashes in recent past with the authorities cancelling the elections for the past two years.
