Rourkela, Jan. 16: Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the Grammy award-winning Hindustani classical musician, will perform at a cultural soiree here.
The State Convention of the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (Spic Macay) will be a three-day event commencing on January 24. The musical event is being organised in association with The Telegraph at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
Jaipur-based Bhatt is also known to have invented the Mohan Veena or the slide guitar. “I believe that music has the power to transform and uplift people from all walks of life,” said the legendary musician, who had won his Grammy award for the album A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder.
While he will perform on the inaugural day, danseuse Geeta Chandran will present beautiful Bharatanatyam recitals on the following day.
Apart from being a world-class dancer, Chandran is also an accomplished Carnatic vocalist. In her dance presentations Chandran weaves abstract notions of joy, beauty, values, aspirations, myth and spirituality. She will be present on the campus with her troupe to enthral the art lovers.
Groomed in the nuances of musical notes by the legendary Balakrushna Dash and guided by prominent bhajan singer Bhikari Bal, Ramahari Das will be seen crooning devotional songs. With over 30 years of his life devoted to music, Das is teaching music at Bhubaneswar based Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.
On the concluding day, the focus will shift from dance and music to theatre. Noted director G S. Chani and his group will present two productions — a street play and a stage play.
On last couple of days, different workshops will also be organised. While oil painting workshop will take place on January 25, clay and terracotta making workshop will be held on the concluding day.
