Spending rise cheer

The state has achieved better fiscal performance by the end of January with concurrent increase in utilisation of the budget allocations on various schemes and in revenue generation.

Bhubaneswar: The state has achieved better fiscal performance by the end of January with concurrent increase in utilisation of the budget allocations on various schemes and in revenue generation.

This upward trend was revealed during a review meet undertaken by chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi at secretaries' meeting held on Tuesday.

Padhi directed all departments to ensure 100 per cent utilisation of the budgeted allocations while focusing on the outcomes of the expenditures.

The review revealed an overall increase of around eight per cent in total budget utilisation on various programmes by the end of January in comparison to the corresponding period of the last financial year.

Total programme expenditure up to January has been around Rs 36, 756 crore this year against Rs 34, 014 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Budget utilisation in social sector has been to the tune of Rs 16, 685 crore up to January this year against a total spending of Rs 14,425 crore during the same period of last financial year, registering a 16 per cent growth.

The expenditure in agriculture and allied sector up to January, 2018, has been around Rs 8,486 crore, a 0.15 per cent increase than the expenditure of the corresponding period of last year.

The expenditure in this sector is executed and monitored principally through the departments of agriculture and farmers' empowerment, water resources, fisheries and animal resource development, and co-operation.

In total, programme expenditure in various sectors has gone up by 8.06 per cent by the end of January, 2018 in comparison to January, 2017.

At the same time, the total revenue generation till January has also gone up by around 22 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period last year.

The total revenue collection up to January last year was around Rs 22,895 crore, which has increased to Rs 27, 894 crore by January this year.
